I dub thee Sir Jacob

I have my doubts that gentlemen still exist.  I have walked up to a store behind a man only to have the door nearly smack me in the face.  And I’ll be the first to admit that on occasion I could probably use a good smack in the face but not at the hands of an irresponsible stranger, thank you very much.  My face-smacking needs to come from a place of love, not a place of disregard.

As a lover of all things King Arthur, and his handsome man-friend Lancelot, I enjoy a bit of chivalry here and there.  Open a door, pull out a chair (but please make sure I know you are doing it – my tailbone has suffered enough damage from the pogo-stick incident this summer), just do something.  I don’t expect to have anyone throw down the gauntlet for me or carry me over mud puddles (though that would be nice when I have on my new suede shoes), but a little bit of niceness goes a long way in this world.

I was thinking about this today as I watched my 11 year old son hold open the door for a high school girl who seemed pleasantly surprised by his chivalrous gesture.  Jacob has always been good about things like this.  He opens doors for women – and just to be fair and prove that he’s not biased at all, he will also do the same for men.  It makes me very proud to know that my son is a true gentleman.  Now, if I can just get him to treat me like the lady I am, all will be well in the Kingdom, indeed.
