The grass is always greener

Grass is always greener

We’ve all had those words thrown our way casually in a conversation when we find ourselves coveting (yes, I know it’s a sin, but my Catholic roots have been dug up and are in need of repotting) something that isn’t ours. It doesn’t matter what we already have, there’s always something more, something that seems better on the other side of that damn fence.

I’ve been peeking over that fence lately and I’d be lying if I said the grass wasn’t lush and beautiful, barefoot worthy even. And it’s not like my grass is dying or anything. In fact, my grass grows just fine and sports a nice, green hue of its own. But the over-the-fence grass seems to be brighter to me right now. Why is that?

I wish I could pinpoint the cause of my lawn envy, but I can’t. I think maybe it’s because the neighbors just moved in and their lawn hasn’t been trampled on as much as mine has. Looking at something new and imagining that it’s yours is always exciting. But that doesn’t make it mine. And whose to say it would make me happy anyway?

As I raise up on my toes to glance over that fence again and take a closer look at the greener grass, I spot a few weeds here and there, and over in the corner I even think I see some dirt peeking through.

Maybe I’m just bored with my yard. But bored doesn’t mean I’m ready to pour concrete over the whole thing and give up the grass altogether. I mean I have a really big yard, with a lot of potential. Maybe I just need to do some landscaping – plant a few new flowers and try a little fertilizer. My thumbs might not be green, but I’ve got 8 other fingers that are capable of making a change. Time to do some gardening.
