Some people are just so stupid. I am so lucky that my son is normal to me and "not normal" to others. It keeps people like Ignor. at the sidelines.

It's amazing how adults are the most closed minded of all. A person like Ignoramus would never be able to handle having a child with any special needs. To me our kids are SUPERHEROS!!!!!

Oh. My. You and Warner are the most awesome parents, the exact people that a child like Jacob needs as parents. There is absolutely no reason that Jacob shouldn't act normal. He IS normal. Should I act like Pippa isn't normal? She's a normal child who has cerebral palsy and can't walk. I would never introduce her as "my daughter who can't walk." That's just one aspect of her, as Jacob's tics are just one part of him.

I'm sorry that you had such a rude person who obviously has issues. I hope they never have a child with special needs because it sounds like they are not equipped to cope with anything like that. Sheesh.

Oh, and you made one mistake, my Moxie girl. You said you changed the name, but I don't think you did. Their given name has GOT to really be Ignoramus. ;-)

WOW. That guy was really something! I had a conversation recently with a mom who is worried about how other kids will accept her preschooler who has some differences. In my experience, it is adults and their need to label/draw lines around normal that create the stigma.

As far as kids go, here's what Hayden's classmates mostly want to know about him:

--why doesn't his mom make him wear shoes?
--how can he read the same Calvin and Hobbes/Diary of a Wimpy Kid books twenty times over?
--why doesn't he like chocolate milk?

Our family has fielded the occasional question about why his mouth moves the way it does, why he's so small, why he speaks the way he does, or why we go to the specialists every year, or the scar on his chin. But just because these fall under the category of "DIAGNOSABLE SYNDROME" doesn't make them any different to kids than how much does your giant dog weigh or do you like hockey or soccer better?

Am I making any sense here? To me I see the adult need to categorize and draw lines for normal that are the stigma. I don't see it so much with the kids.

But maybe this changes with the teen years? we're not there yet.

I remember that time in my life when I just wanted to let loose my loudest "YARP" and never could. There are so many things that I left unsaid because I was to afraid to say the words. As I have gotten older I'm finding it easier to say the things I would have left unsaid as an insecure teen. But,I learned one thing from that time in my life. I knew when the time came and I had Children I would teach them to speak out for their beliefs and value the thoughts they have. I think I have done a pretty good job so far since neither of my girls have a problem speaking their minds.

Yeah, Danny, the whole lack of a maid thing is a problem for me too. I tend to vacillate between the shower and bath, myself.

Guys don't generally take baths...we shower. The French call it "la douche." I am a doucher. I'd probably be scared to get in the tub for a bath. Considering I don't have a maid and I work full-time...not a lot of time for scrubbing the tub. Yep...douching is the way to go... Hmmmm...

OMG... the hiding in the bathroom thing is sooooo me. I read in the tub, too, because it's the only quiet I can find! I let my kids earn video games. I did feel a tad bit guilty about that for a while, but I'm over it. I don't have a DVD player in the car, but we have considered getting one. Especially when we talk about going on a trip. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!
